On August 23, 1986, two undefeated fighters, Mike McCallum and Julian Jackson, stepped into the ring at the Convention Center in Miami Beach, Florida, for the WBA World Super Welterweight title. McCallum, the reigning champion, entered with a flawless record of 26 wins and no losses, while Jackson, the challenger, boasted an impressive 29-0 record with 27 knockouts. The bout, promoted by Don King Productions, Ivette Promotions, and Felix Zabala, promised high-stakes action between two of the division’s most dangerous competitors.
Jackson attempted to impose his renowned power from the opening bell, launching aggressive combinations aimed at neutralizing McCallum early. Known for his explosive knockouts, Jackson sought to make a statement against the more experienced champion. McCallum, however, absorbed the early pressure and showcased his composure, slipping punches and countering with precision. McCallum’s defensive mastery and sharp counters disrupted Jackson’s rhythm as the first round progressed.
In the second round, the tide turned decisively. While still pressing forward, Jackson left himself open to McCallum’s calculated attacks. A precise combination from McCallum sent Jackson to the canvas, a moment that underscored the champion’s superior timing and power. Jackson rose to his feet and fought, displaying his resilience, but the momentum had clearly shifted in McCallum’s favour.
McCallum applied relentless pressure as the round continued, forcing Jackson onto the back foot. Trapping the challenger against the ropes, McCallum unleashed a series of accurate and punishing blows. Jackson, unable to escape or mount a defence, absorbed significant damage, prompting referee Eddie Eckert to intervene and stop the fight.
The stoppage secured McCallum’s third successful defence of the WBA title and demonstrated his ability to neutralize a devastating puncher like Jackson. The win improved McCallum’s record to 27-0 and further cemented his reputation as one of the most skilled and dangerous fighters in the super welterweight division. While suffering his first professional loss, Jackson would go on to recover and achieve success in his own right, becoming a world champion in the following years.
