Lennox Lewis vs Andrew Golota

On October 4, 1997, Lennox Lewis defended his WBC Heavyweight title against Andrew Golota at Caesars Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. This bout, Lewis's second defence in his second reign as champion, was highly anticipated due to Golota's controversial reputation and Lewis's growing status in the heavyweight division.

Both fighters weighed in at 244 lbs, with Lewis entering as a slight 6-5 favourite. The fight, attended by 13,889 spectators, was broadcast on pay-per-view by TVKO, generating approximately 300,000 buys.

From the opening bell, Lewis demonstrated his superior skills and power. He quickly forced Golota into a neutral corner and unleashed a devastating combination, starting with a powerful overhand right. This flurry sent Golota to the canvas for the first time. Although Golota rose quickly, he appeared disoriented and struggled to breathe.

After a generous eight count from referee Joe Cortez, Lewis resumed his assault. He manoeuvred Golota into another corner and launched another barrage of punches, culminating in a second knockdown. This time, Golota crumpled to the floor and was counted out at 1:35 of the first round.

The fight's aftermath was as dramatic as the bout itself. Approximately 15 minutes after the bout, Golota collapsed in his locker room and was rushed to the Atlantic City Medical Center. He had suffered a seizure, briefly stopping breathing and losing his pulse before being revived by CPR.

Further controversy emerged when it was revealed that Golota had received an injection of lidocaine in his right knee shortly before the fight, violating New Jersey State Athletic Control Board regulations. This resulted in a $5,000 fine for Golota and a subsequent $21 million lawsuit against the administering doctor, which was later settled out of court for approximately $1 million.
