The event was promoted by Top Rank, Banner Promotions, and Warriors, and was refereed by Tony Weeks. At stake were the IBF (first defense by Urango) and vacant IBO World Super-lightweight Titles. The match was broadcast live on HBO World Championship Boxing.

With this victory, Hatton successfully reclaimed the IBF title and solidified his position as a top contender in the super-lightweight division.
