On August 3, 1974, at the Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City, Jose Napoles successfully defended his WBC and WBA world welterweight titles against Hedgemon Lewis in their second meeting. The fight, scheduled for 15 rounds, ended in a TKO victory for Napoles at 2:40 of the 9th round. Despite entering the ring as the reigning champion, Napoles faced a determined Lewis, who had shown promise as a challenger in their first bout. However, Napoles dominated the contest this time, taking charge as the fight progressed.
The early rounds saw a surprisingly competitive effort from Lewis. He managed to open a cut over Napoles' left eyebrow, but thanks to the expert cornerwork of trainer Angelo Dundee, the wound was controlled and did not become a factor in the fight. While Lewis had moments of success, including his ability to land a few clean shots, Napoles' experience and tactical approach steadily wore him down.
By the 9th round, Napoles seized full control. He unleashed a series of punishing combinations that sent Lewis into retreat. Backed against the ropes, Lewis struggled to defend himself as Napoles continued to land heavy punches with both hands. Realizing that Lewis could no longer protect himself adequately, the referee, Ramon Berumen, stepped in to stop the fight, giving Napoles the victory by technical knockout.
All three officials scored the bout in favour of Napoles, with each card reading 80-74. This was a dominant performance from the champion, who showed his ability to handle adversity while systematically wearing down his opponent. Post-fight comments from Joe Frazier, Lewis' stablemate, acknowledged Napoles' power, stating, "A puncher will always be a puncher, and that's just what Napoles is." Frazier also noted that once a fighter like Lewis gets caught with clean shots, it can be difficult to recover.
Napoles' victory reaffirmed his place as one of the top welterweights in the world and marked another successful defence of his title, further solidifying his legacy in the division.
