Hometown first defences are sometimes not the most challenging assignments and newly crowned WBO Super-middleweight champion Calzaghe was given a gift in Croatia's Branko Sobot. True, Sobot had only been beaten once, to Frenchman Hacine Cherifi for the European middleweight title, but there were no other notable names on his 14-1 ledger.

The Welsh fans came out to see their new champion and he gave them what they came to see, as he systematically dismantled Sobot, a native of Zagreb, Croatia.
