James Toney vs Tony Thornton

In Tulsa, Oklahoma, James Toney successfully defended his IBF World Super Middleweight Title against Tony Thornton in a unanimous decision victory that enhanced Toney's growing reputation as a master tactician. 

Toney's dominance was evident with scores of 118-110 from two judges and a slightly closer 116-112 from the third. However, Thornton, ranked as the IBF #3 super middleweight contender, proved a formidable opponent. Known for his durable peek-a-boo guard and ability to roll with punches, Thornton posed a credible threat with his sneak right hand, engaging Toney in a tactical battle through six rounds.

The fight, promoted by Bob Arum and Tony Holden and broadcast on HBO World Championship Boxing, showcased Toney's precision and volume of punching. Compubox statistics revealed he landed 431 of 1011 punches, achieving a 43% connection rate, while landing 323 of his 827 punches for a 39% rate.

Thornton showcased resilience and tactical understanding, making the match competitive. 

Despite Thornton's commendable performance, Toney's ability to navigate through the bout with strategic prowess and effective counter-punching secured his victory, marking a significant defence of his title in the super middleweight division.

In the Co-main event, Tommy Morrison shockingly lost in the first round to Michael Bentt for the WBO World Heavyweight Title.
