On December 31, 1952, at the Coliseum in Coral Gables, Florida, Jake LaMotta faced Danny Nardico in a 10-round light heavyweight bout. LaMotta, weighing 173 pounds, entered the ring with a record of 81 wins, 17 losses, and 4 draws. Nardico, at 177 pounds, held a record of 42 wins, 8 losses, and 4 draws.
Throughout the early rounds, Nardico maintained an aggressive approach, utilizing left jabs and right crosses to build a lead on the scorecards. LaMotta focused on body shots with left hooks but could not slow Nardico's momentum.
In the seventh round, Nardico landed a left hook followed by a series of punches that sent LaMotta to the canvasβthe first knockdown of LaMotta's career. Although LaMotta rose before the count of ten, Nardico continued his assault, driving LaMotta into a corner and delivering a barrage of punches until the round concluded.
Between the seventh and eighth rounds, after an examination by the ringside physician, LaMotta's corner decided to stop the fight, resulting in a technical knockout victory for Nardico. This bout was reportedly the first professional boxing match in Florida to be televised nationally.
