On March 21, 1982, at the Showboat Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, Dwight Muhammad Qawi defended his WBC World Light Heavyweight Title against Jerry Martin. This bout, promoted by Don Chargin Productions and refereed by Davey Pearl, marked Qawi's first title defence since winning the championship from Matthew Saad Muhammad on December 19, 1981.
Qawi, who has a record of 16-1-1 and weighs 175 lbs, faced Martin, who has a record of 22-3-0 and weighs 173½ lbs. Martin had previously challenged for the WBA light heavyweight title, losing to Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, and had also been stopped by Matthew Saad Muhammad in an 11th-round TKO.
The fight began with Martin attempting to push Qawi back, finding some success in the first round, but Qawi landed a significant overhand right that rocked Martin. The second round saw both fighters trading hard shots, but Qawi's precision and power were evident as he stunned Martin with another overhand right, followed by a left hook that sent Martin to the canvas. Despite two 8-counts, Martin managed to survive the round.
The fight slowed slightly in the third round as Martin used his footwork to gain distance, but Qawi continued to land heavy shots. By the fourth round, Martin's speed and agility had significantly diminished, and he was repeatedly hurt by Qawi's right hand. The fifth round saw Martin stumbling around the ring while Qawi dominated with fast, loose hooks and uppercuts.
The sixth round was one-sided, with Qawi battering Martin relentlessly until referee Davey Pearl stopped the fight at 2:30, declaring Qawi the winner by TKO. This victory solidified Qawi's hold on the WBC World Light Heavyweight Title, improving his record to 17-1-1.
