The rematch between Danny Lopez and David Kotey on February 15, 1978, was a pivotal moment in the career of "Little Red" Lopez, as he successfully defended his WBC World Featherweight Title against the Ghanaian challenger. The bout took place at the Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was part of the undercard for the first Muhammad Ali vs Leon Spinks fight. Lopez, with a record of 35-3-0 at the time, weighed in at 126 lbs, while Kotey, with a record of 38-3-2, came in slightly lighter at 125 lbs.
This rematch was a significant event, given that their first encounter in Accra, Ghana, on June 11, 1976, had seen Lopez win the title via a unanimous decision. In that initial bout, Lopez had faced a daunting task, fighting in front of a massive crowd of over 120,000 fans at the Accra Sports Stadium, where Kotey was the hometown favourite. However, Lopez's victory marked the beginning of his reign as champion. Since then, Lopez had made one successful title defence against Jose Torres, forcing him to retire in the seventh round in September 1977.
In the rematch, Lopez left no doubt about his superiority over Kotey. The fight was stopped by referee Ray Solis at 1:18 of the sixth round after Lopez landed a devastating combination, starting with a massive overhand right followed by a left-right to the head. This victory solidified Lopez's position as the premiere world champion in the featherweight division. He would make another six successful title defences before facing the rising star Salvador Sanchez, who would eventually end Lopez's reign.
