On Saturday 28th January 2006, Arturo Gatti and Thomas Damgaard met at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. This bout was promoted by Main Events and was fought for the vacant IBA World Welterweight Title. Both fighters entered the ring with impressive records; Arturo Gatti boasted a record of 39-7-0, while Thomas Damgaard was undefeated with a record of 37-0-0. Both fighters weighed in at an equal 147 lbs.
Throughout the match, Gatti showcased his superior hand speed and technique. However, Damgaard proved to be a formidable opponent, landing several good shots throughout the fight. The 11,568 spectators present in the arena were on their feet, cheering on their hero in what was dubbed "Gatti Hall." The atmosphere was electric as Gatti, from Jersey City, New Jersey by way of Montreal, Canada, faced off against Damgaard from Morkov, Denmark.
As the rounds progressed, it became evident that Gatti's punching power was taking its toll on Damgaard. Despite being visibly hurt, the Danish warrior kept coming forward, demonstrating his toughness and resilience. This fight was a classic throwback battle, with both fighters giving their all in pursuit of victory.
In the 11th round, Gatti's power finally wore down the extremely tough Damgaard. At 2:54 into the round, referee Lindsey Page was forced to halt the fight, declaring Gatti the winner by TKO. This victory earned Gatti the IBA World Welterweight Title.
